A wallpaper that's too small for your screen gets stretched and turns soft. One that's the wrong shape gets cropped or letterboxed. Neither problem is solved by downloading a bigger file - it's solved by downloading the right one.
This is every common screen resolution, by device, with the wallpaper size each one actually needs.

How to find your screen resolution
Before anything else, check what you're actually running - a lot of people guess wrong, especially on laptops.
- Windows 11 / 10: Settings › System › Display › Display resolution. The entry marked "(Recommended)" is your native resolution.
- macOS: System Settings › Displays. Hold Option and click Scaled to see real pixel values.
- iPhone / iPad: Not exposed in Settings - look up your model below.
- Android: Settings › Display › Screen resolution on Samsung and some others; otherwise look up the model.
The native resolution is the one that matters. If you've scaled your display for readability, the panel is still its native size underneath, and that's the wallpaper size you want.
Desktop and laptop monitor resolutions
| Display | Resolution | Aspect ratio |
|---|---|---|
| HD | 1280×720 | 16:9 |
| Full HD / 1080p | 1920×1080 | 16:9 |
| QHD / 1440p | 2560×1440 | 16:9 |
| 4K UHD | 3840×2160 | 16:9 |
| 5K | 5120×2880 | 16:9 |
| WUXGA | 1920×1200 | 16:10 |
| WQXGA | 2560×1600 | 16:10 |
1920×1080 is still the most common desktop resolution in the world, but a 4K file downscales onto it perfectly - so if you want one desktop wallpaper to cover several machines, 3840×2160 is the safe pick.
Full detail on 4K specifically, including why some "4K wallpaper" downloads aren't actually 3840×2160, is on the 4K wallpaper page.
Ultrawide monitor wallpaper sizes
| Display | Resolution | Aspect ratio |
|---|---|---|
| 29" / 34" ultrawide | 2560×1080 | 21:9 |
| 34" ultrawide (UWQHD) | 3440×1440 | 21:9 |
| 38" ultrawide | 3840×1600 | 21:9 |
| 40" ultrawide (5K2K) | 5120×2160 | 21:9 |
| 49" super ultrawide (DQHD) | 5120×1440 | 32:9 |
| 57" super ultrawide | 7680×2160 | 32:9 |
Ultrawide is where wrong-size wallpapers hurt most, because almost all stock imagery is 16:9 and gets cropped to fit. Dedicated guides: ultrawide and super ultrawide.
Dual monitor wallpaper sizes
For one image spanning both screens, add the widths together:
| Setup | Spanning size |
|---|---|
| Two 1080p monitors | 3840×1080 |
| Two 1440p monitors | 5120×1440 |
| Two 4K monitors | 7680×2160 |
| Three 1080p monitors | 5760×1080 |
If your monitors have different resolutions, don't span - give each screen its own wallpaper. The dual monitor guide covers both approaches.
MacBook and iMac wallpaper resolutions
Apple doesn't label displays by pixel count, so a lot of Mac owners genuinely don't know their own:
| Model | Resolution |
|---|---|
| MacBook Air 13" (M-series) | 2560×1664 |
| MacBook Air 15" | 2880×1864 |
| MacBook Pro 14" | 3024×1964 |
| MacBook Pro 16" | 3456×2234 |
| iMac 24" | 4480×2520 |
| Studio Display / iMac 27" | 5120×2880 |
These aren't standard quick-pick sizes on most wallpaper sites, PattrnLab included - so the way to get an exact-fit Mac wallpaper is the Custom size option: type your model's numbers in and it renders at exactly that resolution. More on the MacBook wallpaper page.
Downscaling is nearly free; upscaling is what looks bad. If your exact resolution isn't listed anywhere, pick the next size up rather than the next size down.
iPhone wallpaper resolutions
| Model | Resolution |
|---|---|
| iPhone 15 / 15 Pro | 1179×2556 |
| iPhone 15 Plus / Pro Max | 1290×2796 |
| iPhone 14 / 13 / 12 | 1170×2532 |
| iPhone 14 Plus / Pro Max | 1284×2778 |
| iPhone SE (3rd gen) | 750×1334 |
| iPad Pro 12.9" | 2048×2732 |
| iPad Air | 1640×2360 |
Phone resolutions vary more than desktop ones, but the differences are small enough that a nearby size works fine - the screen is inches from your eyes, not feet, and iOS crops centrally. If you want an exact match, use the numbers above. Sizing notes on the iPhone wallpaper page.
Android wallpaper resolutions
| Device class | Resolution |
|---|---|
| Flagship (S24, Pixel 8 Pro) | 1440×3120 to 1440×3200 |
| Mid-range | 1080×2400 |
| Budget | 720×1600 |
| Tablet | 1600×2560 |
Android home screens often scroll horizontally between pages, and some launchers ask for a wallpaper up to twice the screen width so it can pan. If yours does, 2880×3200 covers a flagship panel with room to scroll.
What happens if you use the wrong wallpaper size
- Too small: the OS scales it up. Edges soften, gradients band, fine detail turns mushy. This is the most common cause of a wallpaper looking worse on your screen than it did in the preview.
- Wrong aspect ratio, "fill" mode: the image is cropped. On an ultrawide showing a 16:9 image, that's roughly a third of the composition gone.
- Wrong aspect ratio, "fit" mode: the image is letterboxed with bars.
- Much larger than needed: no visual downside at all, just a bigger file.
That asymmetry is the whole rule: too big is harmless, too small isn't.
Wallpaper file formats: PNG or JPG?
PNG is lossless, so flat colour areas, smooth gradients and sharp edges stay clean - which is exactly what generated and minimal wallpapers are made of. JPG compression tends to introduce visible blocking in large smooth gradients, the most common artefact in dark wallpapers.
PNG files are larger, which matters for a website and doesn't matter at all for a file sitting on your own device. For wallpapers, use PNG.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best wallpaper resolution? Your screen's native resolution. There's no universally best number - 3840×2160 is the most broadly useful single size because it downscales cleanly onto almost everything.
Can I use a 4K wallpaper on a 1080p monitor? Yes, and it'll look perfect. Downscaling loses nothing visible.
Does a higher resolution wallpaper use more RAM? Marginally, while it's being displayed. On any machine from the last decade it's not worth thinking about.
What size should I use if I have several different screens? Generate one design at each screen's native size rather than forcing one file everywhere - that's covered in one wallpaper, every screen.
