Ask whether 3440x1440 is 2K or 4K and you will get both answers, from people who are each half right. The confusion is not about the screen, it is about how resolutions get nicknamed. This page sorts out the names, so you know what you are buying and what size wallpaper to use.

The short answer
3440x1440 is neither 2K nor 4K. It is an ultrawide 1440p resolution, officially called UWQHD. It has about 5.0 million pixels, which is roughly 60 percent of a 4K screen's 8.3 million. In everyday speech it is closest to "2K", but it is not 4K.
What the "K" actually means
The K in a resolution name is a rough count of horizontal pixels in thousands. By that logic:
- 1920x1080 is about 2K, because it is about 1.9 thousand wide.
- 2560x1440 is about 2.5K.
- 3440x1440 is about 3.4K.
- 3840x2160 is about 3.8K, rounded up and sold as 4K.
The "4K" label was borrowed from cinema and attached to 3840x2160, which is not even exactly 4000 wide. So 4K means a specific resolution, 3840x2160, rather than anything you can read off the number.
The names you will see
Listings use several names for the same screen, which is where the mess comes from:
| Name | Resolution | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p, FHD, Full HD | 1920x1080 | Sometimes loosely called 2K |
| 1440p, QHD, WQHD | 2560x1440 | Often called 2K or 2.5K |
| UWQHD | 3440x1440 | Ultrawide QHD; also called 1440p ultrawide |
| UWQHD+ | 3840x1600 | Slightly larger ultrawide |
| UHD, 4K | 3840x2160 | The standard consumer 4K |
| 5K2K, WUHD | 5120x2160 | A genuinely 4K-class ultrawide |
| DQHD | 5120x1440 | Double QHD, the 32:9 size |
"2K" is the loosest term of all, used for both 1920x1080 and 2560x1440. If a listing says 2K, check the actual numbers.
3440x1440 against real 4K
| 3440x1440 | 3840x2160 | |
|---|---|---|
| Pixels | 4.95 million | 8.29 million |
| Shape | about 21:9 | 16:9 |
| Share of a 4K screen | about 60 percent | 100 percent |
| Typical size | 34 inch | 27 to 32 inch |
At 34 inches, a 3440x1440 panel works out to about 110 pixels per inch. A 27 inch 4K screen is about 163. The 4K screen is noticeably sharper per inch, and the ultrawide gives you a much wider field of view instead.
Which ultrawides are genuinely 4K class?
If sharpness is what you are after, look past 3440x1440:
- 3840x1600 has the same width as 4K, with a wider shape, and is marketed as "4K ultrawide" on some 38 inch monitors.
- 5120x2160, called 5K2K, has the full 2160 height of 4K and is the real 4K-class ultrawide.
These cost considerably more and need a stronger graphics card, which is why 3440x1440 stays the common ultrawide choice.
Why listings blur the line
A seller writing "4K ultrawide" can mean 3840x1600 or 5120x2160, a buyer reading it often hears "4K on a wide screen", and a shopper comparing numbers sees 3440 and 3840 close together. Add that "2K" has two meanings, and the same product is described three ways. When in doubt, ignore the nickname and read the two numbers.
What the extra pixels cost
The difference between 3440x1440 and 4K is also a difference in workload. A 4K screen has about 67 percent more pixels to draw than a 3440x1440 one, which is why many people choose the ultrawide when they want a big, smooth display without buying a more powerful graphics card. For a wallpaper this does not matter, since a still image costs next to nothing either way. It matters for games, and it is the real reason the nickname argument is more than pedantry.
What this means for your wallpaper
Wallpapers are matched to the pixels, not the nickname. For a 3440x1440 monitor the right file is 3440x1440. A 4K 3840x2160 wallpaper is a different shape: scaled to fit the width, it loses about a quarter of its height.
