The right desktop wallpaper size is your monitor's native resolution, nothing more complicated than that. The trouble is that nearly everyone is unsure what theirs is, or confuses it with the scaled number the operating system shows. Here is the short version, how to check yours, and what to download for every common screen.

The short answer

Monitor Resolution Ratio
1080p, Full HD 1920x1080 16:9
1440p, QHD 2560x1440 16:9
4K, UHD 3840x2160 16:9
16:10 monitor 1920x1200 or 2560x1600 16:10
Ultrawide 2560x1080 or 3440x1440 about 21:9
Super ultrawide 3840x1080 or 5120x1440 32:9

Find your monitor in that table and download a wallpaper at that exact size, or a larger one in the same shape.

How to find your resolution

Windows: right-click an empty part of the desktop, choose Display settings, and look under Display resolution. The entry marked "Recommended" is your monitor's native resolution.

Mac: open the Apple menu, then System Settings, then Displays. For an external monitor, hold Option while clicking the Scaled option to see the full list, or check the monitor's specification.

Linux: your display settings panel lists the resolution, or run xrandr in a terminal and look for the line with an asterisk.

If it is an external monitor and you are unsure, the model number plus "resolution" in a search gives the answer in seconds.

Display scaling does not change the file you need

Windows can show text at 125, 150 or 200 percent so it is readable on a high-resolution screen. This changes how big things look, not how many pixels the monitor has. A 4K monitor at 150 percent scaling is still a 3840x2160 screen, and the wallpaper should still be 3840x2160. If you have been choosing a size by the scaled number, you have been choosing too small.

1080p monitors

1920x1080 is the most common desktop resolution in the world. A 1920x1080 wallpaper is a perfect match. A 4K file also works, because it is scaled down cleanly, but it is a much bigger download for no visible gain.

1440p monitors

2560x1440 is the sweet spot for many 27 inch monitors. Use a 2560x1440 wallpaper, or a 4K one if you prefer, since downscaling a 4K file to 1440p keeps it crisp.

4K monitors

A 4K screen needs a 3840x2160 wallpaper. Anything smaller is stretched, and the softness is easy to spot on a large panel. This is where a native-size file matters most. See the 4K wallpapers page for downloads at this size.

Ultrawide and other shapes

If your screen is not 16:9, a 16:9 wallpaper is cropped or letterboxed. A 3440x1440 monitor needs 3440x1440, and a 5120x1440 super ultrawide needs 5120x1440. For these shapes, the shape matters more than the pixel count.

What Windows does with the wrong shape

Windows lets you choose how a wallpaper fits: Fill, Fit, Stretch, Tile, Center and Span. Fill covers the screen and trims the overflow, Fit leaves bars, Stretch distorts, and Center shows the file at its own size. Span stretches one image across several monitors. A correctly sized file makes the choice irrelevant. A mismatched one makes it the difference between cropped, barred or warped.

File format and size

Wallpapers are usually PNG or JPEG. PNG keeps flat colour and sharp edges exactly, which suits patterns and gradients, while JPEG compresses photographs into smaller files. A 4K PNG of a smooth gradient can be several megabytes, and that is normal.

More than one monitor

Two or more monitors can each have their own wallpaper, sized to each, or share one image spanning both. For a spanning image, add the widths: two 1920x1080 monitors need a single 3840x1080 file. See the full resolution guide for every device, and how to match one wallpaper to every screen.

Summary

  • Your desktop wallpaper size is your monitor's native resolution, not its scaled one.
  • 1080p is 1920x1080, 1440p is 2560x1440, and 4K is 3840x2160.
  • Ultrawide screens need a file in their own shape.
  • Bigger than needed is fine; smaller is not.

FAQ

What is the desktop wallpaper size?

It is your monitor's native resolution: 1920x1080 for 1080p, 2560x1440 for 1440p and 3840x2160 for 4K. Windows marks it as Recommended in display settings.

What is the computer wallpaper size?

The same as the screen: whatever resolution the computer is displaying natively. For a laptop, that depends on the model, so check display settings.

What are the dimensions for a desktop wallpaper on a Mac?

It depends on the Mac. An iMac 24 inch is 4480x2520, while external displays use their own resolution. Check Displays in System Settings.

Is a 4K wallpaper OK on a 1080p monitor?

Yes. It is scaled down and looks sharp, though the file is larger than it needs to be.
