A laptop's size in inches is the length of its screen's diagonal, and it says almost nothing about the wallpaper you need. Two 14 inch laptops can have screens with very different pixel counts. This page translates inches into the resolutions each size actually comes in, and explains what a "laptop wallpaper size in inches" can and cannot mean.

Inches versus pixels

Inches measure the physical screen. A wallpaper is measured in pixels. The link between them is pixel density: how many pixels fit in each inch. A 14 inch screen with 1920x1200 pixels and a 14 inch screen with 2880x1800 pixels are the same physical size, but the second packs in more pixels, so it needs a bigger file to look sharp.

So the question to answer is not "how many inches" but "how many pixels", and the inch size only narrows it down.

13 inch laptops (13.3, 13.4 and 13.6)

Typical resolutions: 1920x1080, 1920x1200, 2560x1600, 2560x1664 and 2880x1800. The MacBook Air at 13.6 inches is 2560x1664. Many Windows ultrabooks at this size are 1920x1200.

14 inch laptops

This is the most varied size. Common options are 1920x1080, 1920x1200, 2240x1400, 2560x1600 and 2880x1800 on OLED models. The MacBook Pro 14 is 3024x1964.

If you searched for a 14 inch laptop wallpaper size: the most common answer is 1920x1200 for premium laptops and 1920x1080 for mainstream ones. If your screen looks unusually sharp, it is probably one of the higher-resolution options.

15 and 15.6 inch laptops

15.6 inches is the classic Windows laptop size. Most are 1920x1080. Higher-end and gaming models offer 2560x1440 or 3840x2160. The MacBook Air at 15.3 inches is 2880x1864.

For a 15.6 inch laptop wallpaper size, 1920x1080 is by far the most likely, which is a 16:9 shape.

16 inch laptops

Premium 16 inch laptops are usually 16:10: 1920x1200, 2560x1600 or 3840x2400. The MacBook Pro 16 is 3456x2234. Gaming laptops at 16 inches are commonly 2560x1600.

17 inch and larger

17.3 inch laptops are almost always 16:9: 1920x1080, 2560x1440 or 3840x2160.

Small screens: 11 and 12 inch

11.6 inch laptops, including many Chromebooks, are often 1366x768. A few 12 inch models are 3:2 at around 2400x1600.

Why the shape changes the size more than you would expect

The same diagonal is a different physical rectangle depending on the ratio. A 14 inch 16:9 screen is about 12.2 inches wide and 6.9 tall, while a 14 inch 16:10 screen is about 11.9 wide and 7.4 tall: a little narrower, but half an inch taller. That is why 16:10 has spread through premium 13, 14 and 16 inch laptops, and why a 16:9 wallpaper gets trimmed on them. Matching the shape is worth more than matching the inch size.

What "size in inches" can mean for a wallpaper

If you want the laptop wallpaper size in inches as a physical measurement, the answer is that a digital wallpaper has no fixed size in inches. It becomes physical only when shown on a screen, and then the size depends on the screen. You can work it out in two steps.

Pixel density (PPI) is the diagonal in pixels divided by the diagonal in inches:

  • A 15.6 inch, 1920x1080 screen: the diagonal is about 2203 pixels, so about 141 PPI.
  • A 13.6 inch, 2560x1664 screen: about 3053 pixels over 13.6 inches, so about 225 PPI.
  • A 14 inch, 2880x1800 screen: about 3396 pixels over 14 inches, so about 243 PPI.

Physical width and height come from the ratio. A 15.6 inch 16:9 screen is about 13.6 inches wide and 7.6 inches tall. A 14 inch 16:10 screen is about 11.9 inches wide and 7.4 inches tall.

Higher PPI means a sharper image, but it does not change the file you need beyond matching the pixel dimensions.

If you only know the inches

When you cannot check the resolution, use the common answer for your size and prefer a slightly larger file:

  • 13 inch: 2560x1600
  • 14 inch: 2560x1600
  • 15.6 inch: 1920x1080
  • 16 inch: 2560x1600

A file larger than your screen is harmless, because it is scaled down. A smaller one is scaled up and softens. For the exact pixel count, check your display settings as the laptop wallpaper size guide describes.

Summary

  • Inches are the screen's diagonal; wallpapers are measured in pixels.
  • 13 and 14 inch laptops come in the widest range of resolutions.
  • 15.6 inch laptops are mostly 1920x1080; 16 inch premium laptops mostly 16:10.
  • A wallpaper has no size in inches until it is displayed. PPI is the diagonal in pixels over the diagonal in inches.

FAQ

What is the laptop wallpaper size in inches?

A wallpaper has no inch size of its own. It is a pixel image, and its physical size depends on the screen showing it. Choose the wallpaper by pixel dimensions that match your screen.

What is a 14 inch laptop wallpaper size?

Most often 1920x1200 on premium models and 1920x1080 on mainstream ones, with 2560x1600 and 2880x1800 on higher-resolution panels.

What is a 15.6 inch laptop wallpaper size?

Usually 1920x1080. Some gaming and creator models use 2560x1440 or 3840x2160.

Do two laptops of the same inch size need the same wallpaper?

Not necessarily. The same diagonal can have different pixel counts and even different shapes, so check your resolution rather than relying on the inch size.
