How to Set a Different Wallpaper on Each Monitor in Windows 10 and 11

Windows hides a per-monitor wallpaper picker by default. The exact setting to use two different images, plus how to make them look intentional together.

Right-click the desktop, open Personalize, and Windows' background picker looks like it only has room for one image. It doesn't - there's a per-monitor option one level down that most people never find, and it's been there since Windows 10.

This guide covers the exact steps for Windows 11 and Windows 10, the macOS equivalent, and the two genuinely different approaches to a dual monitor wallpaper: two separate images, or one wide image spanning both screens.

How to set a different wallpaper on each monitor in Windows 11

  1. Right-click the desktop and choose Personalize, then Background.
  2. Set Personalize your background to Picture.
  3. Click Browse photos and pick your first image the normal way.
  4. Now right-click that image's thumbnail in the recent-images row. A menu appears with Set for monitor 1, Set for monitor 2, and so on.
  5. Choose the monitor you want it on.
  6. Add your second image with Browse photos, right-click its thumbnail, and assign it to the other monitor.

The per-monitor menu only appears on thumbnails in that recent row, which is why it's so easy to miss - it isn't visible until you've already set at least one picture the ordinary way.

How to set a different wallpaper on each monitor in Windows 10

The flow is nearly identical, just in the older Settings layout:

  1. Right-click the desktop, choose Personalize.
  2. Under Background, select Picture.
  3. Click Browse and choose an image.
  4. Right-click the thumbnail under "Choose your picture" and select Set for monitor 1 or Set for monitor 2.
  5. Repeat with your second image for the other monitor.
Pro Tip

Not sure which physical screen is "monitor 1"? Go to Settings › System › Display and click Identify. Windows flashes a big number on each screen.

How to set different wallpapers on each display in macOS

macOS handles this without any hidden menus:

  1. Open System Settings › Wallpaper.
  2. Each connected display gets its own section in that panel.
  3. Scroll to the display you want and choose its image there.

On older macOS versions it's System Preferences › Desktop & Screen Saver, where a separate window opens on each monitor - whichever window is sitting on a given screen controls that screen.

Two different images, or one wide image?

There are two genuinely different setups here, and they suit different desks.

Two separate images is what most people searching for a dual screen wallpaper actually want. Each monitor gets its own complete design. It works with mismatched monitor sizes, mismatched resolutions, and monitors that aren't physically level with each other.

One wide image spanning both treats the two screens as a single canvas. It looks fantastic when your monitors are identical and properly aligned, and it falls apart when they're not - the image jumps at the bezel.

Making two wallpapers look intentional together

The risk with two different images is that your desk ends up looking like two strangers' screens pushed together. The fix is to keep them related but not identical: same palette family, different pattern, or the same pattern in two related palettes.

Monitor 2 - a completely different pattern, but the palette sits in the same neon family. Different enough to be two distinct wallpapers, related enough to read as one setup.

Build both in the editor: generate the first, download it, then change only the pattern - leaving the palette alone - and download the second.

One continuous image across two monitors

If your two monitors are the same size and sit level with each other, a single wide image avoids any seam or alignment problem.

For two 4K monitors side by side, the number you need is 7680×2160 - exactly double the width of one 3840×2160 screen. PattrnLab has this as a named Dual 4K preset.

7680×2160 - one continuous image across two 4K monitors. Windows and macOS both treat this as a single wide desktop and split it at the bezel; the horizon line should meet up cleanly where your screens meet.

To use it on Windows, set the picture the normal way and choose Span from the "Choose a fit" dropdown. On macOS, pick Fill Screen with the image set on both displays.

Dual monitor wallpaper sizes by setup

Setup Span size Per-monitor size
Two 1080p monitors 3840×1080 1920×1080 each
Two 1440p monitors 5120×1440 2560×1440 each
Two 4K monitors 7680×2160 3840×2160 each
Two 34" ultrawides 6880×1440 3440×1440 each

If your two monitors aren't the same resolution, skip the span approach - there's no single image size that works cleanly across mismatched panels. Use one wallpaper per screen instead.

What about a vertical second monitor?

Plenty of people run one monitor landscape and a second one rotated into portrait orientation for code, documents or chat. A spanning image can't serve that - the two halves are different shapes.

Give each screen its own render: 3840×2160 for the landscape one, 2160×3840 for the rotated one. Same pattern, same palette, same seed, two orientations. The vertical monitor guide covers this setup specifically.

Troubleshooting: the per-monitor option isn't showing

  • You haven't set a picture yet. The right-click menu only appears on thumbnails in the recent-images row, which is empty until you browse for an image once.
  • Your background mode is Slideshow or Solid colour. Switch it to Picture first.
  • You're using a third-party wallpaper tool. Some replace Windows' own background handling entirely and override whatever you set here.
  • Windows keeps resetting on reboot. This is usually a "Show desktop background image" setting being cleared by a power or performance profile - check Settings › Accessibility › Visual effects.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a different wallpaper on each monitor in Windows 11 Home?

Yes. This isn't a Pro-only feature; it works on every edition.

Why does my spanned wallpaper look stretched?

The fit mode is probably set to Fill rather than Span. Fill treats the image as belonging to one screen and duplicates it.

Do my monitors need matching resolutions?

For two separate wallpapers, no. For one spanning image, effectively yes - mismatched panels cut the image at different scales.

Where do I get a wallpaper at exactly 7680x2160?

Generate one at that size rather than hunting for a downloadable file - there are very few stock images at that resolution and shape. More options on the dual monitor wallpaper page.

How to set a different wallpaper for each monitor in Windows 11

Open Settings, Personalisation, Background, and pick Picture. Right-click the image you want in the Recent images list and choose Set for monitor 1 or Set for monitor 2. The per-monitor option only appears on that right-click menu, which is why it is so easy to miss.

Can you set different backgrounds for dual monitors windows 11

Yes, natively, with no extra software. The setting is hidden in the right-click menu of a recent image rather than shown as a visible option, so most people assume Windows cannot do it.

How to change background on one screen only

Right-click your chosen image under Recent images and pick the specific monitor. Choosing the image normally, by left-clicking it, applies it to every display instead.

What size wallpaper for dual monitors

For a separate wallpaper on each, use each monitor own resolution. For one image spanning both, add the widths together - two 1920x1080 screens need a single 3840x1080 file.

Why does Windows keep resetting my per-monitor wallpapers?

Usually a display order change: undocking, a driver update or a cable swap can renumber the monitors, so the wallpapers follow the old numbering. Re-applying them after the change fixes it until the next renumber.
