The right MacBook Air wallpaper size depends on which Air you own, and the number macOS shows in Displays settings is usually not the one you want. Here are the real pixel counts, how to check yours, and what to make of the confusing scaled resolutions.

The short answer
| MacBook | Native resolution | Ratio |
|---|---|---|
| MacBook Air 13 inch (2018 to 2020, including M1) | 2560x1600 | 16:10 |
| MacBook Air 13.6 inch (M2, M3, M4) | 2560x1664 | about 1.54:1 |
| MacBook Air 15.3 inch (M2, M3, M4) | 2880x1864 | about 1.54:1 |
| MacBook Air 13 inch (2017 and earlier) | 1440x900 | 16:10 |
If you want one file that works well across the common 13 inch models, 2560x1664 is the safe choice. It is the current 13.6 inch Air's exact size and only trims a sliver on the 2560x1600 models.
Which Air do you have?
Click the Apple menu, then About This Mac. Newer macOS versions show the model name, such as "MacBook Air (13-inch, M3, 2024)". Choose More Info, then scroll to Displays, and macOS lists the real panel, for example "13.6-inch (2560 x 1664)". That is the native resolution and the number to design for.
Native resolution versus "looks like"
Open System Settings, then Displays, and a MacBook shows a "Default" resolution such as 1470x956. That is how large things appear, not how many pixels the panel has. macOS renders at double that and fits the result to the panel, which is why the numbers differ.
- A 13.6 inch Air looks like 1470x956 but has 2560x1664 real pixels.
- A 15.3 inch Air looks like 1710x1112 but has 2880x1864 real pixels.
- A MacBook Pro 14 looks like 1512x982 and has 3024x1964 real pixels, which is exactly double.
If you searched for a "1512 x 982 wallpaper", that is the Pro 14's scaled number. The wallpaper to make is 3024x1964, twice that in each direction.
The notch and the menu bar
Current MacBook Airs have a camera notch in the top centre, and the menu bar sits across the top of the screen on either side of it, over your wallpaper. The menu bar on notched Macs is taller than it used to be, roughly 74 real pixels on an Air.
For a wallpaper, that means the top edge is partly covered at all times. Avoid putting a bright, detailed feature or a logo in that strip. Soft gradients and textures run cleanly under it.
Why 16:10 wallpapers fit almost perfectly
The old Air screens were a true 16:10, and a standard 16:10 file of 2560x1600 is the same shape. The 13.6 inch Air is slightly taller at about 1.54, so a 2560x1600 wallpaper is scaled to the width and trimmed by about four percent top and bottom. That is the "fill" setting at work, and it is hard to notice.
The MacBook wallpapers page offers 2560x1600 downloads for exactly this reason, and a custom size like 2560x1664 gives a pixel-perfect fit for current 13 inch models.
Does a 4K wallpaper help on a MacBook Air?
A 3840x2160 wallpaper is a 16:9 shape on a screen that is not 16:9. macOS scales it down and trims about 13 percent of the width on a 13.6 inch Air to fill. It still looks fine, because downscaling is gentle, but it is wasted pixels and cropped edges. A 16:10 file at 2560 wide is better matched and a smaller download.
Older and Pro models
For reference, the other MacBook sizes you may meet:
- MacBook Pro 13 inch (M1, M2, and Retina models): 2560x1600.
- MacBook Pro 14 inch: 3024x1964.
- MacBook Pro 16 inch: 3456x2234, or 3072x1920 on the 2019 model.
- MacBook Pro 15 inch Retina: 2880x1800.
Using a Mac with an external display
An external monitor has its own resolution and shape, usually 16:9 or ultrawide, and macOS lets you set a different wallpaper on each screen. See how to set a different wallpaper on each monitor on Mac. Size the laptop's wallpaper for the laptop and the monitor's for the monitor.
Summary
- Current 13.6 inch Air: 2560x1664. 15.3 inch Air: 2880x1864. M1 Air: 2560x1600.
- Use the native resolution from About This Mac, not the scaled "looks like" number.
- Keep the top strip calm; the menu bar and notch sit over it.
- A 16:10 file at 2560 wide fits any 13 inch Air with almost no cropping.
FAQ
What is the MacBook Air wallpaper size?
For a 13.6 inch MacBook Air (M2, M3, M4) it is 2560x1664. For the 15.3 inch Air it is 2880x1864. The 2018 to 2020 13 inch Airs, including the M1, are 2560x1600.
What is macbook air 13 wallpaper size?
2560x1664 for the current 13.6 inch models and 2560x1600 for the M1 and earlier Retina models. Either size also works on the other with only a few percent trimmed.
What size is a MacBook Pro 14 inch wallpaper?
3024x1964. The default scaled setting of 1512x982 is exactly half that, which is where the "1512 x 982 wallpaper" search comes from.
Is a 4K wallpaper good for a MacBook Air?
It works, but a 16:10 image around 2560 pixels wide is a better match. A 4K 16:9 file wastes pixels and has about 13 percent of its width trimmed.
