Frequently asked questions

What size should my wallpaper be?

Use your screen's native resolution in physical pixels: the CSS size your browser reports multiplied by the device pixel ratio. A 1728x1117 laptop display at 2x pixel density is really 3456x2234, so that is the size to download. A wallpaper at native size is never scaled up, so it stays sharp.

Why does my computer report a smaller resolution than my screen's spec?

Retina and high-DPI displays render the desktop at a scaled size, so the operating system and browser report fewer "points" than the panel has pixels. The checker multiplies by your device pixel ratio to recover the true pixel count. If you have changed the display scaling, the detected number follows your current setting, not the panel's maximum.

What if my wallpaper is a different size or shape than my screen?

Operating systems fill, fit, stretch, tile or center a wallpaper. Fill crops the edges when the shapes differ, so a 16:9 image on a 21:9 monitor loses the top and bottom. Matching your screen's aspect ratio exactly means nothing is cropped or stretched.

Should I use a bigger wallpaper than my screen?

It does not help. A larger image is scaled down to fit, which wastes file size and can soften fine detail. The exception is a multi-monitor setup spanning one image across screens, where you want the combined width.

Does this tool upload anything?

No. The numbers come from your browser's own screen properties and are read on your device. Nothing is sent to a server or stored.
